How do solar panels work?

A solar photovoltaic (PV) panel is an assembly of numerous cells, each constructed from layers of a semi-conducting material, predominantly silicon. The basic principle behind these cells is that when they are exposed to light, the semi-conducting material initiates a process that generates a flow of electricity. This phenomenon is due to the nature of the semi-conductor and the photovoltaic effect.

Notably, the cells within these panels are designed to be efficient in various light conditions. They do not require direct sunlight to function and are capable of producing electricity even on overcast days. However, their efficiency is correlated with the intensity of the sunlight they receive. In ideal conditions, under strong sunshine, these cells are more productive and generate more electricity.

Solar PV systems typically consist of multiple panels linked together. A standard panel in these systems can produce approximately 400 watts (W) of energy when exposed to strong sunlight. A common setup for residential or small-scale commercial use includes about 10 of these panels. Collectively, they produce a significant amount of electricity in the form of direct current (DC).

However, most household appliances and electrical systems use alternating current (AC). Therefore, to make the electricity generated by solar PV systems usable for common household applications, an inverter is integrated into the system. This inverter is responsible for converting the DC electricity produced by the solar panels into AC electricity.
